From Prep to Perfection: How to Do Knotless Braids the Healthy Way
Healthy hair is the foundation of any protective style, and starting with moisturized hair can make a huge difference in how your braids look and last. In this blog, I will show you how to do knotless braids, a lightweight protective style that reduces tension on your scalp. Protective styles like this are designed to shield your hair from breakage and promote hair growth, but they work best when your hair is properly prepped. Read about the importance of protective styles here. By focusing on healthy hair first, you can enjoy beautiful, long-lasting braids without damaging your natural strands.

 Products Needed include:

  • Apple cider vinegar (for cleaning the hair)
  • Deep conditioner
  • Loc N Braiding Gel
  • Rat-tail comb and hair clips (for parting)
  • 2 to 3 packs of X-Pressions Pre-stretched Braiding Hair
  • Bonnet (Maintenance)
  • Light oil
  • Hot water (for sealing ends)

Prep

Before installing knotless braids, Prep is the most important step for keeping your hair healthy. Start by cleaning your braiding hair with apple cider vinegar, because this helps remove the alkaline coating that can cause itching or irritation on the scalp. We will do this by soaking the hair in a 1:2 ratio of apple cider and water for 15 minutes until water, sure to rinse thoroughly between each soak, until there is no longer a white film. If you need a simple guide to washing braiding hair, you can check out this prep guide.  After preparing the hair, make sure your natural hair is healthy and moisturized. I recommend doing a deep-conditioning treatment to add hydration and strength before installing the style. It is also important to trim your ends, because split ends can continue to travel the hair shaft, creating more damage. So, be sure to take a deep conditioner of your choice and follow the products instructions to ensure proper use.

Brick Layering+ Knotless Technique

The next step is creating clean, even parts, and using a brick-layer pattern gives knotless braids a full and balanced look. Brick layering means each part in a new row sits between the parts in the row beneath it, similar to stacked bricks on a brick home. This prevents visible gaps and helps the style fall naturally giving a fuller look. Once your sections are set, begin the knotless technique by starting a small braid with your natural hair. After braiding one or two turns, feed in a very small piece of braiding hair and continue the braiding. Add another small piece each time the braid rotates, keeping every piece consistent in size. The piece of hair should never be larger than the original piece you started with. This gradual feed-in method keeps tension low at the roots, avoids bulky knots, and creates a smooth transition from your hair to braiding hair. If you want to view examples of brick layering and feed-in method, this visual parting tutorial shows a great example of brick layering and a tutorial on how to do a knotless braid.

Tucking Ends + Healthy Maintenance

After completing each braid, it is important to make sure your natural ends are fully tucked inside the braiding hair to protect them from friction and breakage. Tucking also helps the braids look smoother and last longer. Check out how to tuck to see how to properly tuck ends to protect them or hide color. Once the braids are finished, seal the ends by dipping them carefully in hot water, which keeps them from unraveling. To maintain healthy hair while wearing this style, keep your scalp moisturized, lightly oil your parts, and wear a satin bonnet or scarf at night to reduce frizz. Washing your scalp with a gentle, diluted shampoo can also help remove buildup without disturbing the style. If you update your hair routine to include these steps when it's time to do a protective style, I know that you'll see a difference in your hair as I did mine. Until next time! ☮
